16 Sep SEPT 19: The Miracle of San Gennaro in live streaming

Saturday 19 September 2020 at 09:30 in live streaming on the official Facebook page of the Chapel of San Gennaro and on the website www.cappellasangennaro.it on the occasion of the feast of the patron saint, it will be possible to participate remotely in the Miracle of San Gennaro.

The miracle of September 19, the day of the beheading of the young bishop of Benevento, is the most important of the year. The whole city stops waiting for the liquefaction of the blood attributed to the martyr and contained in ampoules, kept in a safe in the Chapel of the Treasury. An ancient rite, which has been celebrated for many centuries and which is still a symbol of good luck for the Neapolitans.

This year the party will be there but without crowds and in a ‘reduced’ version, with reduced admissions (no more than two hundred people in the cathedral, including celebrants and choir) and maxi screens in the basilica of Santa Restituta and outside on the churchyard of the Cathedral of Naples. On the 19th morning the doors of the Duomo will be open at 9 am; there will be no 8 o’clock mass, at the end of which the sanitation operations would have been necessary before allowing access for the faithful to San Gennaro. At 9.45 am the cardinal will go to the Chapel of the Saint, which this year will be empty, without the “Relatives of San Gennaro”, where with the help of the Abbot Monsignor Vincenzo De Gregorio, the mayor Luigi de Magistris, and the vice president of Deputation of Duke Riccardo Carafa d’Andria, will proceed to the opening of the safe that contains the reliquary with the ampoules of blood.

Necessary measures which, inevitably, will prevent many faithful from being present. For this reason, the liturgy will once again be broadcast in live streaming on the website and on the facebook page of the Cappella del Tesoro di San Gennaro

D’Uva, who manages the audio guide service and visits inside the Chapel, will take care of the organization and communication of this new event while, to guide the spectators in this live broadcast, there will be Paolo Jorio, director of the San Gennaro Treasure Museum.
